The Importance of Regular Visits to the Dental Clinic

Your oral health is incredibly important as it ensures that you don’t endure severe pain and is also the one-way road to sustaining yourself with food and water. We are taught from a very young age about the importance of healthy teeth and gums and we begin brushing as early as we are able to coordinate the hand to mouth action.

However, we are not able to guarantee our oral health just by regularly brushing and flossing as sometimes unexpected pain or developments can arise within our mouths that are simply out of our control. An example of this would be wisdom teeth coming through that can often be painful and they may need to be removed at a dental clinic.

How often do we need to visit the dental clinic?

Regular visits to the dental clinic mean once every 6 months. If you are regularly brushing and flossing your teeth that is twice a day, then this frequency of check-ups will be suitable to ensure your oral health. These check-ups are important as it helps to identify any problems that are developing that should be monitored and to ensure that anything that could become serious is caught before it actually does.

Why do we need to make regular visits to the dental clinic?

There are a number of things that your dentist will do throughout a standard dental clinic check-up that will ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy until your next visit. Firstly, they will check for any cavities that may have developed since your last visit to the dental clinic before proceeding to identify if there is any swelling or redness throughout the mouth. This helps to identify any potential issues that could arise in the future so that it can be acted upon.

The second phase of the dental clinic check-up is the cleaning. Whilst regular brushing and flossing are very important it is difficult to get every single bit of food and plaque that develops on your teeth and gums. Plaque is a bacterium that develops as a result of eating food and can eventually harden and become tartar that eats away at your teeth and gums. At a dental clinic, the dentist will clean with away via a process called scaling to ensure that you don’t develop any tartar related issues.

Finally, they will polish your teeth to keep them looking white and prevent them from any discolouration as a result of stains from food and drink such as coffee.

Visiting the dental clinic is also another reminder of the importance of our oral health. Every time we visit we get another message of regular brushing and flossing and this ensures that we don’t get lazy and only do it once a day. This makes the visit a double benefit as the dentist will successfully clean out teeth and deal with any necessary issues and we are also further motivated to continue to take good care of our teeth.

Our dentists are always willing to help you achieve your goals of that perfect smile. There are various different ways we are able to help you with your journey, with orthodontic work such as braces and invisalign. Something we hear quite often is people expressing regret that they never had braces or invisalign when they were younger and are now self conscious about their smile. Did you know that it is never too late to start your journey towards achieving that smile you have always wanted? So during your next appointment, let your dentist know you would like to discuss the option of Invisalign or braces.

Sometimes patients may need to have a tooth extracted before they get their braces.

This is sometimes recommended prior to braces for the following reason:

- Having a tooth extracted before getting braces can help create space in the mouth for the teeth that are now going to be aligned and will require that little bit of extra room.

It is recommended to get an extraction if there is crowding in the mouth, meaning that your teeth are very close together and overlapping. Your teeth cannot be aligned properly if there is no room for them to do so, so removing the tooth will help.

If you have decided to get braces and need to have a tooth extracted, there are some things that you can do to prepare for the procedure:

- Let your dentist know of any allergies you have or medications that you take on a regular basis. This is important as it may impact any anesthetic or antibiotics prescribed after your extraction

- Make sure you have something to eat beforehand. You may not be able to eat for a few hours while still numb from the anesthetic

- Come prepared to your appointment. Bring any referrals or x-rays with you- Know what to expect during your appointment.

Knowing what is involved during the extraction may take away the fear of the unknownAfter your extraction, following these after care tips will increase your chances of a smooth recovery:

- Don't eat or drink anything that is too hot or too cold as it can irritate the extraction site.

Also avoid foods such as rice that may get lodged in the gum and cause irritation- Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol for a few days as it can cause irritation and slow down your recovery

- 24 hours after your extraction, you can rinse your mouth with salt water. It is important not to do this during the first 24 hours as it may dislodge any blood clots which will aid in your recoveryIf you are looking for a good dentist in the Mulgrave area and are thinking about taking that first step towards braces or invisalign, make an appointment with Hawkesbury Family Dental today by calling us on 4577 7311
